Freshwater Ecology and Restoration

Mining activities influence landscape water cycles and water quality for a long time. For instance, mining-induced inputs of iron, acid and other substances into rivers compromise aquatic communities and a range of ecosystem services such as the supply of drinking water. To help solve these problems, we look for sustainable solutions that are based on natural processes. In collaboration with partners we have developed a biotechnology to precipitate the transported iron and sulphate within the aquifer by the help of certain bacteria. Moreover, the research group studies the contribution of biological processes to the neutralisation of acid mining lakes.
