Reclamation for agriculture

FIB researchers deal with the conversion of infertile raw soils into stable and productive farmland. The core aspect is the reestablishment of basic soil functions and soil fertility, concerning in particular humus accumulation and biological nutrient cycles. More precisely, studies are dedicated to the application of soil improving substrates, for example lignite-based humus fertilisers, as well as to site adapted crop rotations, management and utilisation strategies. Of increasing importance is renewable biomass, which provides farming opportunities on low productive soils. To this end, we run pot and field experiments to investigate the cropping potentials of drought tolerant Sorghum, Sudan grass and Miscanthus as profitable alternatives to energy maize.
